Treasures in the Text: Joshua 1:8-9

Joshua 1:9 takes place after Moses’ death, as Joshua is preparing to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. He is stepping into a major responsibility.

God tells Joshua: “This is my command: be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:9 NLT

This encouragement is repeated several times in Joshua 1. God’s command to be courageous was connected to Joshua’s responsibility to obey God’s law, lead faithfully, and trust that God would keep His promises. His courage was not based on confidence in himself, but on God’s presence and faithfulness.

The verse does not mean believers will never feel afraid or that every plan will succeed. It teaches that we can move forward in obedience despite fear because God is with us. In verse 8, God says to 'study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.' Although this likely refers to the laws of Deuteronomy, it reminds me of the importance for believers to study God's Word so we understand His will for us and how to live.

Courage comes from trusting God’s presence, following His Word, and relying on His faithfulness when facing uncertainty or challenging responsibilities.
