Seek Out the Light

Recently, I turned to a page on my Day-to-Day calendar that simply said, “Seek out the light.” The illustration showed a moth with its wings spread wide, drawn toward the glow surrounding it.

Those four words stayed with me.

In nature, moths instinctively move toward light. When darkness surrounds them, the light gives them something to follow. In many ways, we are also searching for light, especially when life feels uncertain, painful, or confusing. We look for something that will give us hope, show us the way forward, and assure us that the darkness will not last forever.

But the light we truly need is not merely positive thinking, temporary happiness, or relief from our circumstances. The light we need is Jesus.

Jesus Is the Light of the World

Jesus made this unmistakably clear:

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” - John 8:12 (NLT)

Jesus did not simply say that He could point us toward the light. He said that He is the Light.

The world offers many substitutes. We may seek light through success, relationships, approval, entertainment, possessions, or our own ability to fix things. Some of these may make us feel better temporarily, but none can provide the lasting hope, truth, and life found in Christ.

John 1:4–5 (NLT) tells us:

The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

The darkness may feel powerful, but it is not more powerful than Jesus. Grief cannot extinguish Him. Fear cannot overcome Him. Confusion cannot make Him less true. The failures of people, even those who claim to represent Him, cannot diminish the goodness of Christ. His light continues to shine.

Seeking the Light Requires Turning Toward Him

I'm sure I'm not the only one that doesn't always go right to God when I'm looking for direction, anxious or upset. It is possible to know that Jesus is the Light while still looking elsewhere for direction. When I feel hurt, I may turn first to my own thoughts and replay the situation repeatedly. When I feel uncertain, I may search for answers everywhere before opening God’s Word. When I feel anxious, I may try to control every possible outcome rather than bringing my concerns to the Lord.

Seeking the Light means intentionally turning our attention toward Jesus.

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “LORD, I am coming. -Psalms 27:8 (NLT)

Seeking Jesus is more than asking Him to change our circumstances. It is wanting to know Him within those circumstances. It is coming to Him through prayer, reading His Word, remembering His character, and allowing His truth to guide our next steps.

Sometimes we want God to illuminate the entire road ahead. We want all our questions answered and every outcome revealed (and we often want it in our own timing). Yet God often gives us enough light for the step directly in front of us.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. -Psalms 119:105 (NLT)

A lamp does not necessarily reveal miles of road at once. It gives enough light to continue walking. God’s Word may not tell us every detail of what will happen, but it tells us who God is, what He has promised, and how He calls us to live today.

The Light Reveals What Is True

Light does more than comfort us, it also reveals things.

When sunlight enters a dark room, it exposes what had been hidden. In the same way, the light of Christ reveals both the truth about God and the truth about our own hearts. His light may uncover bitterness we have allowed to grow, fear we have been obeying, sin we have excused, or wounds that need to be surrendered to Him.

That kind of exposure can be uncomfortable, but Jesus does not reveal our darkness merely to shame us. He brings it into the light so that we can confess it, receive His forgiveness, and experience His transforming grace.

Ephesians 5:8 (NLT) says:

For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!

Notice that our identity changes because we are “in the Lord.” We do not manufacture our own light through good behavior or religious effort. Whatever light is visible in us comes from Christ.

Reflecting His Light to Others

When we seek Jesus and walk closely with Him, His light begins to shine through the way we live.

Jesus told His followers:

You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. -Matthew 5:14 (NLT)

This does not mean that we become the source of the light. We reflect the One who is. We reflect Christ’s light when we choose kindness in a harsh world, tell the truth when dishonesty would be easier, forgive when resentment feels justified, and remain faithful when life becomes difficult. We shine when our words offer grace, our actions demonstrate compassion, and our lives point people toward the hope found in Jesus.

Matthew 5:16 (NLT) continues:

In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

The purpose of shining is not to draw attention to ourselves. It is to help others see the goodness of God.

Keep Turning Toward the Light

Like the moth on the calendar page, we were created to seek the light. Yet we must be careful about which light we follow. Not everything that appears bright will lead us to truth. Our emotions can mislead us. The approval of people can disappear. Circumstances can change overnight.

Jesus remains constant. Seek Him...

• When life feels dark

• When you do not know what to do next

• When your heart is wounded

• When you have wandered

• And when life is joyful and everything seems bright

One day, everyone who belongs to Christ will live in His presence, where darkness will be gone forever.

Revelation 21:23 (NLT) describes the future New Earth:

And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.

Until that day, we continue walking by the light He gives us. We open His Word. We seek His face. We follow His voice. And when the darkness feels overwhelming, we remember that darkness has never overcome the Light...and it never will.
